How We Grow

Our farms are committed to organic growing practices. We don’t use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Black Fox Farm is Certified Naturally Grown.

Our growing practices include:

Minimizing tillage. Reducing tillage improves nutrient cycling, reduces erosion, and increases soil’s ability to absorb and hold water. Whistlepig Farm practices no-till agriculture while Black Fox Farm uses a low-till system.

Crop rotation and intercropping. Monocultural systems are vulnerable to pests and disease. We plant to maximize biodiversity including mixed cropping, hedgerows and beneficial insect habitat, and carefully-planned crop rotations.

Cover cropping. We grow cover crops to build soil organic matter, control weeds, and reduce soil erosion.

Rotating livestock. As Black Fox Farm’s chickens rotate around our fields, grazing hens provide natural fertility and weed and pest management.

Natural pest control. By using a combination of physical barriers, natural predators, and cultural controls, we manage pests without relying on chemical intervention.
